Sentosa Community Learning Centre Updates (New Centre)

This year is a new milestone for the Sentosa Community Learning Centre (SCLC) – our new centre was officially established on 2 March 2020! From the searching for a suitable location, the planning process for future development, to the renovation and setting up of the new centre, it was a journey full of blessings and grace. At this moment, we are still in the middle of adapting to the new premises, new facilities and environment, and also some adjustments in daily routine. We prayerfully hope that our work in this new area will give the children of refugees and other marginalised communities in Taman Sentosa the opportunity to attend school. The initial number of registered students was 27 (15 in Year 1 and 12 in Year 2). The students, aged between 6 and 9 years, are mainly from Myanmar and Pakistan. Currently, there are 4 staff members with Abiyang as the Head Teacher, Parveen and Sana as full-time teachers, and Lawrence as part-time teacher. In terms of curriculum, the subjects include English, Mathematics, Art and Crafts, storytelling and physical education. The medium of instruction is mainly English. In the first three months, we plan to focus on giving the students a sound foundation in phonics. This will help our students develop good reading skills and correct handwriting in English. Every parent is eager to give their children a good education. There is no exception to the parents in SCLC. But due to the limited space and resources, we had to come to the decision to limit the number of new students intake by accepting only children who can meet our qualifying requirements.
I truly hope that this new centre is a starting point to nurture children of excellence and good character as stated in Proverbs 22: 6: Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it – Said AbiYang, The Head Teacher of SCLC
