Girl Shelter Guardian Sharing by Hoi Yan 2024

In 2024, we achieved immeasurable progress across several key areas: rescue high-risk cases, support education and self-development, provide counselling and rehabilitation and implementing programs that empower individuals to build a more stable future.

Empowerment for Shelter Mothers

We introduced a program for four shelter mothers – two Rohingyas and two Indonesian women. The program included practical training in baking, catering, and acquiring business skills to equipp the mothers with some basic skills to generate self-income. A Care Group was established alongside these sessions, providing a structured environment where participants shared experiences and supported one another. The program enhanced participants’ self-confidence and economic prospects while fostering a sense of community.

Trauma Healing and Rehabilitation for Shelter Girls

A trauma healing program was implemented for girls in our shelter, led by Sofia, Lynda from Mexico, external counsellor Philomena, and family therapist Cheryl Chin. Through individual and group counselling sessions, 10 girls improved in their emotional disposition and resilience, evidenced by their increased participation in school and community activities.

Group Activities and Team Building

House guardians and teachers organized team-building activities, including day trips, trust-building games, and nature hikes. Over 50 participants benefited from these activities, which improved teamwork and communication skills. A Thanksgiving Night provided a platform for students to express gratitude and share their thoughts. As a result, participants reported feelings with regards to their peers and are confident in expressing themselves in group settings.

Breakthroughs in Challenging Areas

We saw progress in previously challenging areas, including handling court cases. Through partnerships with NGOs and government agencies, we supported 8 cases involving abuse and exploitation. Trauma counselling sessions reached over 20 individuals, helping them to process their experiences and to begin their recovery. We also organized workshops that enhanced cultural understanding and communication skills, enabling participants to build stronger relationships within the community

Art Therapy for Emotional Expression

Art therapy sessions were introduced to help participants process and express their emotions. Over 15 participants attended these sessions, creating drawings to represent their feelings and experiences. This approach facilitated open communication and emotional awareness, with participants showing an improved ability to articulate their thoughts and emotions in follow-up discussions.
