Building Bridges Through Service: International Students Meet Malaysian Refugees

In an effort to create meaningful connections and raise awareness about an often overlooked community, we invited international students from different universities and nationalities to our learning centre in Sungai Buloh.

This gives international students an opportunity to meet and do something for the refugees in Malaysia. Above all, an eye-opener and an awareness of this group of people living amongst them. Most international students don’t know about refugees in Malaysia and have no idea where they are from. The “V-Bless” campaign not only helps refugee students, bringing joy and fun to them, but it also highlights the existence of the refugees in Malaysia.

V-bless stands for “volunteer”, referring to the international students – be there in person, which is a practical action sharing joy and love with the refugees, listen to the refugees’ stories, eat with them, share a moral story to encourage the refugee students, share snacks and even clean the centre together with them.

With this program, we encourage the international students to volunteer once a month at a time slot of 3 hours each time in order to render a concrete contribution, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the plight of the refugees in our country.

The volunteers often bring joy and fun to the refugee students, encouraging them to see the importance of studies. The ultimate intention is to hope that one day these refugees can also become like them, helping others in their midst and working towards a brighter future.

Through V-Bless, we are not just creating temporary moments of happiness—we are building lasting connections that transform perspectives on both sides. As international students discover the resilience and dreams of refugee families, and refugee students see new possibilities through their volunteers’ examples, we move closer to a community where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and thrive.

This simple act of showing up, month after month, proves that meaningful change begins with presence, compassion, and the belief that every person deserves hope for tomorrow
