My Story of Being a Burmese Community Teacher at ALP Learning Centre

When I first joined ElShaddai Centre, I was with the Social Work team, and focused on the Myanmar Community-Based Protection. I had no experience and quickly recognized that they were training me rather than just hiring me. As I became acquainted with ElShaddai Centre, not only were my eyes gradually opened, my English listening and speaking skills also improved.

After six months, I was appointed a teacher at a learning centre. It was another opportunity to better myself. I started by observing the teachers in Jalan Pasar (Kindergarten) for one week. The teachers were very kind to me, and I was happy there. After a week, I was posted to the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) Center.

I have been teaching at the new school for five months, and I have received a lot of kindness and compassion from my fellow teachers. They are more than just colleagues; they are like family, especially how the head teacher, Ms. Ajunta, guides and mentors the staff and students. Her discipline to the students and staff is very clear and consistent, and she is also good at giving teaching guidance. She taught me how to teach the children effectively, control the class and constructively discipline the students.

Two weeks ago, we moved to a new place called ALP Berkeley. The new school is very neat and tidy with updated school equipment. Because everything in the school is new, the students also appear to be more enthusiastic about their studies. With a thorough and consistent school administration, both the teachers and students are excited and feel positive about going to school.

Let me share my little testimony here. I used to feel pain and get depressed and stressed easily. I was traumatized for a long time. At that time, my situation was not good, and sometimes I couldn’t sleep because I was scared during night time. Gradually, I couldn’t bear the stress anymore, and even a trivial matter became difficult. I had no idea where that came from, and I didn’t want to share it with anyone. Eventually, the head teacher in school, Teacher Ajunta, noticed it, and she asked what was happening to me. She prayed for me, encouraged me and shared Bible verses with me.

God’s miracle came upon me, and now, I am no longer depressed and traumatized! I can sleep well during nighttime; I’ve been set free!

ALP is my home; all my colleagues are like my mother and sisters. It’s not only a school where I get a lot of experience, but also a place of love- a place where I can feel at home. I really appreciate my head teacher, Ajunta, who constantly prays and comforts me.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my working experience, and special thanks to all my ElShaddai Centre colleagues for all their support and prayers. ElShaddai Centre not only paved the way for my life, but I now also have a future for my career. I aspire to be a good teacher and a good social worker. I want to continue teaching and encouraging those who are depressed and feeling lost like me.
