Abdullah’s story (as told by him)
Abdullah is a young man from Myanmar who was referred to ElShaddai in a desperate situation and badly traumatized. He came to Malaysia less than a decade ago escaping persecution back in Myanmar. He was kidnapped while travelling across state to meet his wife and child – he was involved in forced labour, sexual exploitation, and drug exploitation in a remote plantation and he managed to escape after some months. Unfortunately his brother was also a human trafficked victim by the agent who was paid to smuggle him into Malaysia seeking asylum. The brother was released after a huge ransom was paid. The brothers eventually reunited tearfully after years. Abdullah was also reunited with his immediate family at ElShaddai.
Abdullah began exhibiting symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The ElShaddai team has since been closely following up on him. The family was protected in a safe community placement and received cash-based interventions, psychosocial support, regular home visits, medical services, and registration under UNHCR PRN.
This case stands as a testimony to the vital work that ElShaddai does in providing essential support and protection for victims and survivors living in an unjust and dangerous world. Abdullah and his family have shown significant improvement in their psychosocial well-being, his sleep patterns have stabilised, and he now looks forward to providing for his family independently
