Boys’ Boarding House 2025

Aziz’s story
Aziz moved into the boys’ hostel in early June this year to enroll in ALP Level 1. He was 10 years old, an unaccompanied minor and is very eager to get an education. However, the sudden switch from an all Rohingya language to an all-English teaching environment brought him a lot of stress. He knew nothing about English and had many doubts, fears,
and worries when faced with the learning tasks expected. He once asked, “Why can’t I start with the most basic learning?”

In the boys’ hostel, house guardians consistently encouraged his learning, helping with both academic and conversational English. Through hard work and perseverance, he made notable progress. He scored perfectly on two recent spelling tests, and his teachers praised his improvement, recognising his efforts and steady progress.

Hassan’s journal
“Moving into the Boys’ Hostel and House of12 was the biggest change in my life that I did not expect. Initially, I was really nervous about living away from my home, friends, and family. I struggled with various things, including my studies, confidence, and responsibilities because when I was at home, everything was done for me and I had no worries. On top of all these struggles, communicating with new people was the hardest part for me, as I’m a very shy person.

However, everything began to change after I joined the hostel. Living away from myfamily was difficult, but I experience lots of new things. I had learned how to organise my belongings, manage my time, and take responsibility for myself. I also learned how to get up in the morning on my own. I realized that being responsible made me proud of myself.

At the hostel, we had various activities that helped us grow both as a community and as individuals. We had fellowship, studies, sports, duties, and group talks. These activities that I have done with my friends didn’t just build teamwork but also strengthened our friendships. I also gained leadership skills throughout these activities.

“Over time, I became more responsible, hardworking, capable, confident, and kinder. I also learned to manage my time wisely. Most importantly, I learned to treat others well, knowing everyone has their own struggles. I also realized people trusted me and enjoyed being around me, which made metruly happy.

Living in the hostel has truly transformed me into a new person. It has been one of the best experiences of my life, teaching me lessons that no one else could have taught. The wise, strong, confident, andresponsible person I am today is a result of my time in the hostel. I am, and will always be, grateful foreverything I have learned. These experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
