Ma was referred to the us by UNHCR, with her young daughter in Jan 2025. With limited English, she bravely shared her story—her husband had abandoned her, and had subjected her to physical abuse. Despite the pain she had endured, we quickly recognized Ma’s potential, she is a bright, hardworking, a quick learner with a kind and helpful spirit. Originally from Myanmar, Ma came to Malaysia three years ago through an arranged marriage that sadly became a source of trauma and mistreatment. She has been actively participating in group counselling and therapy sessions and also enrolled in a baking class as part of her journey toward healing and empowerment.
During the month of Ramadan, Ma noticed an old, unused sewing machine in a neighbour’s home. When she asked to borrow it, the neighbour kindly gifted it to her. That small act of generosity sparked something new in Ma—joy and a sense of purpose. She began sewing clothes for herself and her daughter in preparation for the Eid celebration. Then, she lovingly sewed outfits for all the mothers and children in the shelter. On the eve of Eid, she even surprised the house guardians with a set of handmade clothes. The shelter was filled with happiness and celebration.
To help her improve her skills and pursue sewing as a livelihood, we arranged for volunteer professional trainers to work with Ma and other mothers in the shelter. Ma has
already begun offering alteration services for friends and visitors at the shelter, receiving small gifts of money in appreciation for her work.
Tailoring has become more than a skill for Ma—it is a source of healing, joy, and dignity. She is now sharing her knowledge and encouraging other mothers to learn as well, becoming a beacon of hope and strength in the women shelter.
