ElShaddai Centre set up a wellness centre in a lovely room provided by the St Barnabas church based in Klang. At the centre, medical aids and counselling sessions are conducted for students and their communities.
Although this is a simple place, it is well-equipped with basic essentials, and it has been very helpful for the refugees and migrant communities who have little or no access to basic healthcare. In the record to date, there are about 300 individuals who have been cared for and treated in the wellness centre. This number comprises 80% of students, with 20% being their parents from the communities.
A heartfelt appreciation to Apex Healthcare, which has been very supportive in this work for many years with the supply of essential over-the-counter medicine and healthcare products. At the same time, the Wellness Centre has received professional services rendered by a team of volunteer doctors, counsellors and other healthcare personnel.
Patients who need comprehensive care from a social point of view are referred to our Social Work department for follow-up, where they are assisted comprehensively. If the patient requires an evaluation by a specialist, they are referred to the Tzu Chi clinic.
One of the key points of working at the wellness centre is our approach to students, their families, and the different communities. Healthcare services are perceived as an open door to people’s needs and to their homes, allowing us to listen to people not only in their physical ailments but also as a platform for them to voice out their deepest needs. Teamwork, patience, solidarity and sensitivity are the necessary elements for this work to be effective and fruitful.
