Redemption’s Path: Ali’s Story of Hope and Transformation

Ali’s story is a true testament to rebirth and strength. His story begins with an unimaginable hardship, as he had to leaves his home in Afghanistan abruptly, escaping terrorist groups after the loss of his parents. When Ali came to Malaysia, he faced many challenges as an unaccompanied minor, working tirelessly at various odd jobs to earn a living. For several months, Ali slept in the streets and bus stops, where he was mugged and exploited by strangers. It was this difficult transition in life that led him to a major depression and multiple attempts to end his own life.

Sometime in 2021, Ali was discovered unconscious by a resident of a flat, after he attempted to end his life. A group of community members helped to admit him to the hospital. Upon discharge, he was referred to ElShaddai Centre’s boys’ shelter, where he lived for the next two years

During his two years with ElShaddai Centre, Ali embarked on a journey of healing and transformation. Ali was provided with various opportunities, including education, mental health support, case management, and vocational skills training. As Ali’s caseworker, I would say that even though he had dedicated teachers, friends, house guardians, and caseworkers to journey with him, this transformation of life could only happen with a miracle upon him, and Ali’s strength and determination to live a dignified, and renewed life.

In two years, Ali’s English improved tremendously, and he successfully graduated from ElShaddai Centre’s E-graduate diploma in the air-conditioning training program and worked full-time as an airconditioning technician. Ali also found solace and healing through music. He picked up piano-playing skills and had a dedicated teacher, Jacquelyn, who provided him with lessons. Ali even started his own YouTube channel, sharing beautiful piano covers with the world.

After many years of waiting, I am so happy that Ali finally had the chance to be resettled to another country, as it has always been his long-awaited dream. On the day of his departure, I was able to send him off at the UNHCR’s departure point. As I recall back on that day, I remember lumps in my throat and tears rolling from my eyes. Why? I find no reason not to be moved to the core as I witness this living testimony of hope that I am grateful to be a part of. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported Ali throughout his journey- his teachers, volunteers from near and far, community members, his friends, housemates, and many others.
