This year, the Social Work Department hosted Breaking Chains: the Porn Addiction Workshop, a series designed to bring awareness and help break addictive patterns among teens and adolescent boys in the community. More than 60 participants attended the sessions, which were developed in response to growing concerns from
community members that digital intoxication was disrupting social relationships and hindering healthy psychological development.
Specifically tailored for boys, the Breaking Chains series evolved into a monthly gathering and eventually led to the formation of peer support groups. Guided by the principle, “Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial, ” the workshop highlighted how distractions and addictions, especially those found online, can pull
young people into a world of unrealistic expectations. Participants learned to
distinguish between distractions and “tractions, ” helping them recognise the
difference between what derails them and what drives them forward.
In addition to the Breaking Chains series, the Social Work Team also gathered
students from various centres for a comprehensive workshop on sex education. Boys and girls were separated to create a safe environment where topics such as safe vs unsafe touch, boundaries, sensitivity, prevention of sexual exploitation, and
respectful communication were addressed openly and appropriately.
